Many bid and spec requirements call out TVSS/SPD to be integrated into components such as switchgear and sub panels, without realizing other avenues within the network that will be susceptible to power disruptions. The resulting lower cost solution, while protecting against single entry external surges, will provide limited protection against the daily damage caused by internally generated transients. With over 80 percent of transients and surges generated internally, protecting beyond the single entry becomes a significant factor for engineers in network construction.
