Transient Overvoltage and Lightning Protection
This one-day course is designed for the engineer, technician, electrician or facility manager whose job responsibilities include working with AC power systems, DC power systems, sensitive electronic equipment, voice or data networks and seek protection against disruption and damage caused by transient overvoltages and lightning surge events. A Prerequisite for attendance is a basic knowledge of electrical theory including Ohm's Law.
Physical lightning protection, a high-integrity single point grounding system, and properly selected and applied surge protection are the most effective means of assuring minimum of interference from transient over voltages whether caused by load switching, lightning or other EMP sources.
The course is applicable to residential, commercial, industrial and communications site environments. Sections include Lightning (formation, direct strikes, field effects), Switching Surges (capacitive circuits, inductive circuits, magnitudes), Physical Lightning Protection (static wires, air terminals, bonding, modeling), Grounding of Electrical Distributions (earth grounding, AC distributions, DC distributions), Power Line Transient Overvoltage Protection (waveforms, technologies, application) and Data and Transmission Line Surge Protection (twisted pair, coaxial cable, EMP considerations).
The "Grounding for AC/DC Electrical Distribution Systems" course is led by an experienced instructor. Our instructors are active in numerous professional organizations including: IEC, IEEE, ANSI, NEMA and UL Advisory, LPI and PEG. They have also been featured speakers to many national conventions such as the Rockwell/Allen Bradley Fair, Building Industry Consulting Services International Conference (BICSI), the International Wireless Communications Expo (IWCE) and the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB).
Each student will receive a course-specific manual, including charts and graphs that will continue to serve as a valuable reference in the future. Class meets from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m and includes complimentary catered continental breakfast, lunch and refreshment breaks to give time for student-faculty interaction.
The course is accredited for 0.8 Continuing Education Units through the University of Idaho. Add the One-Day Site Inspection Training to this course and receive a discounted price on the pair of courses.
